The importance of communication is in the very definition of a leader; they are teachers, developers, and designers; they improve, create, and develop. Communication in leadership is not a tool but an essential component of what makes a leader able to lead.

The realisation of innovative ideas is a goal of leadership and key area of importance in communication. It’s the start, the middle, and the end of the process that count just as much as an initial idea. At each stage, communication is present, and for leaders who succeed, it’s strong and effective. Communication enables transparency to be provided at every level of a business, it encourages the development and implementation of effective organisation, and it shows that a leader is confident. Leaders who master the art of communication are able to recognise when their communication is causing more harm than good, when they need to repeat and emphasise a point, and when it’s time to stop talking and to start listening to what is being said.

With these communication skills, leaders are better able to guide their employees through hardship, overcome challenges, and educate their team to do better and achieve more in the future. Great leaders focus on the tone that they use, they put value on the benefits of non-verbal communication, and they do not shy away from adapting their communication style when it’s needed.

Communication is able to build other key areas of leadership within a workplace that are essential for organisational growth. These range from the establishment of trust between employees, customers, and shareholders; the creation of a culture of commitment and loyalty; and the guidance of employees to a single goal with the motivation to succeed.

 

Changing Leadership Styles to Meet the Challenges of Now

No leader is able to predict when a change may happen or what it may mean for their organisation. However, great leaders need to be able to identify what has the potential to bring about change, they need to be able to stay ahead of innovation, and they need to be able to provide clear and concise communication no matter how stressful or difficult a challenge may be.

To make sure that they are always prepared if the worst happens, leaders must use communication to build and maintain strong relationships, manage their employees effectively, and hold regular team meetings to reinforce the goals, aims, and direction of a company. Through direct or virtual communication, it’s the responsibility of a leader to know what is happening in their company at all times and on all levels.

Communcation has been used for thousands of years in thousands of forms, it is neither new nor is it considered advanced. Communication is simply the way that information passes from one person to another, both intentionally and unintentionally. The importance is in the act and in the risk. The act of communication is to share information, growing and developing together. The risk is that communication can be misunderstood. A leader must have control over the act and of the risk if they want to grow without misunderstanding

Every business needs to be innovative, and it’s a leader’s responsibility to ensure that it always is. They must do this with communication that matters. It was Margaret Wheatley who once said, “Innovation is fostered by information gathered from new connections; from insights gained by journeys into other disciplines or places; from active, collegial networks and fluid, open boundaries. Innovation arises from ongoing circles of exchange, where information is not just accumulated or stored, but created. Knowledge is generated anew from connections that weren't there before.”, a leader can expand into any realm of possibility when they are able to communicate what they want. The importance of communication to a leader is the ability to share what they need and listen to what others have to say, so together, everyone can move forward.
